Cosmetic procedures can address various aesthetic concerns and are sought after by men and women looking to improve their overall appearance. With advanced techniques blending safety with efficiency, and offering significant results in minimal downtime, aesthetic procedures have steadily risen in popularity and a number of innovative procedures have been introduced in recent years. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has revealed the rise in popularity of procedures over the years by comparing the figures in the last 18 years.
According to the ASAPS report, here are the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures and the increase in the number of procedures during the 18 years from 1997 to 2014.
- Liposuction: 176,863 to 342,494
- Breast Augmentation: 101,176 to 286,694
- Eyelid Surgery: 159,232 to 165,714
- Tummy Tuck: 34,002 to 164,021
- Nose Surgery: 137,053 to 145,909
Interestingly, the number of cosmetic procedures for men has increased more than 273% in the past 18 years. Also, the number of cosmetic procedures for women has increased by more than 429% in the same period. Most of the procedures were performed on people in the age range of 35 – 50. It comes to about 4.2 million procedures and comprised about 40.1% of the total number of procedures.
Liposuction was the most popular surgical procedure performed last year. With more people wanting a trim body to look awesome in their preferred outfits, safe body contouring techniques such as lipo was expected to make a big impact. However, what is most interesting is that a 94% increase in the number of lipo procedures was noted in 2014 ever since ASAPS initiated its survey in 1997. Breast augmentation was the second in popularity last year with 183% increase since 1997. Eyelid surgery which was third in the list showed a 4% increase, tummy tuck which was fourth in the list showed a 383% increase and the 5th most popular procedure nose surgery showed a 7% increase in figures since 1997.
Celebrity procedures, new trends such as selfies and the influence of social media, more awareness about the possibilities of the procedures, and introduction of advanced techniques which made the procedures simpler, safer and more effective, might have all contributed to the popularity of cosmetic surgery in today’s world.
