Recent reports from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reveal the rising popularity of cosmetic surgery in the US. According to a recent ASPS report, Americans spent a record-breaking amount of more than 16.5 billion dollars on cosmetic plastic surgery last year, a four percent increase from the previous year. In March, ASPS reported that there were more than 17.7 million surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2018. ASPS statistics also reveal a rise in new trends in body-shaping procedures such as non-invasive fat reduction, breast augmentations and liposuction. The use of advanced non-surgical techniques is an important factor driving these trends. For example, liposuction in NYC is performed using minimally invasive Smartlipo technology, which involves reduced downtime and recovery time.
Of the more than 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2018, the top five female surgical procedures were:
- Breast augmentation (313,735 procedures, up 4% from 2017)
- Liposuction (229,030 procedures, up 5% from 2017)
- Eyelid surgery (175,035 procedures, down 1% from 2017)
- Nose reshaping (161,120 procedures, down 2% from 2017)
- Tummy tuck (125,189 procedures, about the same as 2017)
The top five male cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2018 were:
- Nose reshaping (52,660 procedures, up 1% from 2017)
- Eyelid surgery (31,494 procedures, down 2% from 2017)
- Liposuction (29,528 procedures, up 5% from 2017)
- Breast reduction (24,753 procedures, down 8% from 2017)
- Hair transplantation (16,840 procedures, up 17% from 2017)
One of the most sought after cosmetic surgical procedures, liposuction in NYC targets and liquefies unwanted fat deposits, allowing them to be easily removed from virtually any part of the body. In 2018, liposuction was the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure among women and the third most popular cosmetic surgical procedure among men. Gynecomastia treatment in Manhattan, NYC helps men to achieve a natural looking, masculine chest by removing excess fat in the area. NYC plastic surgeons perform the procedure using the FDA-approved minimally-invasive Smartlipo Triplex workstation.
ASPS President Alan Matarasso said, “Liposuction continues to be the gold standard in body contouring because of its versatility, efficiency and effectiveness.” Just one liposuction procedure can treat more areas and larger areas, he noted. However, while liposuction provides more consistent and predictable results than non-invasive treatments, Dr Matarasso pointed out that new non-surgical fat reduction machinery continues to evolve and play a role in reshaping areas of the body.”
People considering a procedure should ask their friends and family, review before and after pictures, and consult with more than one surgeon, according to Dr Matarasso. Patients should focus on choosing a plastic surgeon who places a quality result and patient safety at the forefront of every procedure.
