Liposuction is a popular body shaping procedure among both men and women, and a large part of this popularity is because of its safety and efficacy. When diet and exercise fail to address the stubborn fat spots, this procedure helps the right candidates achieve their desired aesthetic goals. A global survey report by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) has listed out the age-wise popularity of common cosmetic procedures. According to the report, men and women in the age group of 19-34 years underwent the maximum number of liposuction procedures globally in 2015.
Comprising 45.1% of the total lipo procedures performed last year, those in the 19-34 years age group did 628,262 procedures. This is followed by those in the age group 35-50 years performing 563,693 procedures, which is 40.4% of the total lipo procedures in 2015. The third in the list are people in the 51-64 age group (149,639, 10.7%) and fourth position is occupied by individuals age 18 years or younger (32,494, 2.3%). With a total of 20,500 procedures and making up only 1.5% of the total, individuals 65 years old or older did the least number of lipo treatments in 2015.
Liposuction is not a solution for weight loss and those who are close to their normal body weight are considered ideal to take up the treatment. Age is not much of a barrier for most of the cosmetic procedures such as liposuction to achieve the desired outcome. However, they have to meet a lot of other requirements to be eligible for the treatment. This includes being physically and medically fit with no serious illness that may affect the procedure efficiency and recovery, good skin tone etc. Importantly, they should maintain realistic expectations about what the procedure can offer them. Some have raised questions regarding whether there is an age that is too old to take up lipo. Generally speaking, if all of the criteria are met, age is not much of a concern.
With a total of 1,394,588 procedures performed worldwide, liposuction was the second most popular globally in 2015. Americans underwent the maximum number of lipo procedures with a total of 240,565 procedures. Advanced body sculpting possibilities with safe techniques such as laser liposuction and the availability of qualified and experienced plastic surgeons who can ensure optimum results might have contributed to the treatment popularity.
