According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Americans spent more than $15 billion on combined surgical and nonsurgical aesthetic procedures for the first time ever, accounting for an 11% increase over the past year alone. Liposuction surgery was the most popular surgical procedure in 2016. On comparing women and men, reports say that women are savvier about the variety of options available to them. They have desires that aren’t always based on trends, and they know what they want. The demand for male cosmetic surgery is rising with men exploring options to look their best and as youthful as they feel. In 2016, male procedures accounted for nearly 1 in 10 of the total procedures performed in the United States, according to the ASAPS.
Both men and women are opting to tackle stubborn body fat with the help of liposuction surgery. Regardless of the differences in the procedures men and women were getting last year, they had one desire in common – to eliminate excess body fat. Liposuction was the top procedure for both genders, with 369,323 performed on women and 45,012 on men. Tummy liposuction is a popular procedure among both men and women. The introduction of new minimally-invasive technology such as SmartLipo helped boost the demand for liposuction.
Smartlipo laser liposuction is a state-of-the-art technology that offers a less invasive alternative to the traditional procedure. It blends safety with efficiency to remove stubborn fat deposits from large and small body areas. It also offers amazing skin tightening effects with efficient tissue coagulation for smooth and seamless results.
Breast reduction (a total of 31,368 procedures) was the second most popular procedure among men. The demand for liposuction breast reduction, the treatment of Gynecomastia, has risen by 181% since ASAPS initiated its survey in 1997. Over 31,000 male breast reduction procedures were performed in 2016.
For women, breast augmentation bags the second position with a total of 310,444 procedures done in 2016. While 13% of augmentations were performed using saline breast implants, 87% used silicone implants.
Other cosmetic procedures that are on the top list of women are:
- Tummy Tuck (173,536 procedures)
- Breast Lift (161,412 procedures)
- Eyelid Surgery (145,858 procedures)
Top procedures for men include:
- Eyelid Surgery (28,025 procedures)
- Nose Surgery (26,205 procedures)
- Facelift (13,702 procedures)
The figures do not come as a surprise to the President of ASAPS.
He said, “The numbers have been increasing in this industry year-over-year for a variety of reasons. A healthy economy with the lowest unemployment rate since 2008, a desire on the part of baby-boomers and their offspring to remain competitive in a youth-centric workforce, younger generations recognizing the value in preventative anti-aging care, and of course, procedural and technological innovations that provide patients with more personalized options in both the surgical and nonsurgical categories. In other words, there’s something for everyone”.
New trends such as selfies and the influence of social media has increased awareness about the possibilities of the procedures, and introduction of advanced body contouring techniques have made the procedures simpler, safer and more effective.
In Manhattan, liposuction is performed by experienced plastic surgeons at AAAASF-accredited plastic surgery facilities. The right surgeon will evaluate individual concerns and goals, and provide customized solutions for men and women.
